Why do I love? Because God Loved Me First

It’s easy to say WHAT I love: my kids, my wife, my family, friends, etc. but it’s way harder to say WHY. Maybe the WHY is because they make me smile or because they make me feel good about myself. These are legit reasons but they are also very temporary. What about when the people I love disappoint or wrong me? What if I love someone who doesn’t love me back? If I love my family, regardless of what they do or how they wrong me, my reasons above don’t line up at all. So WHY do I love? Fortunately, the Bible gives us a clear answer to this question:

“We love because he first loved us.”

‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:19‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Wait, what? Because he loved us? Because who loved us? The answer is God. God loved us first. God is love and when we love, we know God, even if we don’t know we know God. In 1 John 4:7, we read:

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

1 John 4:7 ESV

“for love is from God”. Let that sink in for a minute. We can love each other because God loved us first and “whoever loves has been born of God and knows God”. The fact that I love because God loved me first is just amazing to me and I just wanted to share this bit of awesomeness.

When in doubt, I look for the answers in the Bible and I have always found it. I hope and pray that when you have doubts, you do the same. Give it to God and wait for Him to answer. He always answers. I hope that the knowledge that you love others because God loved you first helps you like it has helped me. God bless you and yours.
